Waterdragers, Het Zuidelijk Toneel

by Marcel Osterop
A new writing premiere for a Dutch regional venue

A new writing premiere for one of the Netherlands’ major regional producing venues. Playwright Marcel Osterop spent three months at Eindhoven’s city hall investigating the intricate workings of local government and council politics. Waterdragers combines verbatim material from this research alongside a fantastical allegory examining the clash between civil servants and elected councilors. A large square floor resting on a central pivot is kept in balance (or deliberately disturbed) by the ensemble as a metaphor for compromises and coalitions. The success of its initial run in 2014 led to a 2016 national tour.
