after the novel
by Michel Houellebecq

Submission is a political thriller, a dystopian novel and most importantly a satire, imagining a France of the near future in which French cultural life is turned on its head. France’s best-selling author Michel Houllebecq is one of the most controversial writers of his generation producing many of the most urgent and disturbing novels of our time. Teunkie van der Sluijs adapted and directed his novel Submission to a provocative satire shifting its target from religion to a mischievous, comic and dark reflection on the lack of faith and meaning in Western society.

A work-in-progress production presented as part of HOME Manchester’s France Now season 2018.

Premiere: 30 November 2018

“As a Muslim, my first reaction to hearing about this play was shock, but I was engrossed in the themes and topics of the daring play, and the great performances of the actors. A wonderful satire.”

“Director Teunkie van der Sluijs and his company of actors deserve great credit; captivating but also keeps the provocative spirit of Submission.”
